♥ Dad's Story

Today, my parents and I attend a wedding dinner in a restaurant. Well, the youngest daughter of my neighbour is getting married. =)

The wedding dinner is carried out typically according to the Chinese custom and the restaurant is full with mostly the people from my kampung. My kampung is small and every person just knows each and another.

The dinner is started with dishes and a beautiful voice singing several Teresa Teng's songs. I'm simply captivated. Then it is followed by the open-singing section. Lots of aunty and some uncle get unto the stage. Gosh.. the singing... errrrr.. I assume you get what I mean.. LOL

Suddenly, a name Chen Xing 陈兴 is called to the stage for a song. Several old uncles are clapping their hands. I don't know the name but it's quite closed to my dad's, Chen Cheng Xing 陈成兴. I notice my dad somehow walking to the stage. I rush to him and say, "Papa, not calling you!" He says in return, "Someone has called me for a song." "Not you la, don't go." At the same time, I hear voices pursuing him.

Well, I has successfully stopped him and I see my mom rushing out from the toilet. Strange..

My parents =)

Fyi, my dad loves singing. Last time when I was small, I used to hear him singing a lot. Unfortunately, late of 2006, my dad had been verified to have cancer, 3rd stage, on his throat. Recalling my memory, I was really miserable that time and sometimes cry alone. Thank God, my dad is now fully recovered! He lost his voice, sadly. He still can speak of course and sometimes sing. However, he no longer has nice voice. Well, I sense that he has never noticed that, don't know why.... =.=

That's probably the main reason I stop him from performing a song. Too soon, the dinner has ended. We greet the bride and bridegroom before leaving. In the car, my mom tells me, "XXX's father is the one giving papa's name to the MC." Wow, I wonder how she discovers that. Anyway, Chen Xing is not my dad's name! Somehow, I feel that my dad is trying to express his unsatisfiable eagerness to perform singing in front of many. I'm kinda sorry. In fact, I don't have the heart to let him embarrassingly singing in the hall like what other aunty uncle does. Oppss...

My mon continues, "Chen Xing is your papa's "Artist name (艺名)" when he was young." Huh?! What's on earth is that?! Then I remember the story my dad used to tell me... "I was really great in singing last time and I was a part-time singer. I joined quite many performances also." In fact, I was never convinced with that statement.

After that, I ask why would he use the name Chen Xing 陈兴 instead of his real name Chen Cheng Xing 陈成兴? He says Chen Xing 陈兴 sounds nicer. Wow, I see... I feel that a piece of my dad's precious memories is triggered. He starts telling stories. Then, I'm very astonished to find out that he actually composed a few songs. He sings them out spontaneously in the car. The songs are really familiar as I'm really used to hear him singing when I was small. I never thought that the songs were made by himself! Guess what, one of the song that my dad composed was even used by a great famous singer at 70's, Lee Yi 李逸.

I google 李逸 and I'm surprised to find that he was one of the most famous singers among Chinese Asian at that time and was from Malaysia. Gosh..! I start to believe what my dad says.

My dad continues, "I used to go on stage and sing when I was young(around 20) and many people around the neighborhood knew me." Well, I think that is quite reasonable as his "Artist name" is still remembered by the elder people in my kampung. I personally ask my mom about Chen Xing. LOL. Surprisingly, my mom had even heard of him that time. My mom apparently not stayed in my kampung that time. o.O

"Gonggong(my grandpa) don't like me to sing. He said I might would turn bad." my dad adds on. Then my mom tells me personally, "Your gonggong kept your papa's motor key, stopped him from joining the final of a significant singing competition." Awww.. Quite sad isn't it..?

It was already 30++ years. My dad then went to work in KL for several years and then came back to my kampung, inherited the oil palm industry of my grandpa. He had always wanted to sing. Too bad, there were no Redbox that time to fulfill his singing desire and he can no longer sing nicely now due to the cancer he got few years ago.

Anyway, he would still sing in the house sometimes and when he asks me for feedback. I will say, "Not bad~" Otherwise, he would try again until he gets the reasonable compliment. ^^"

That's all! =D
